If you want the fuel economy and eco-benefits of a Prius without its staid family image, the Lexus CT 200h might be the perfect fit. (Photo: Trevor Hofmann, Canadian Auto Press) again, if you think Lexus' entry-level compact is merely a tarted up Prius, it's time to shake up that misconception.
Toyota is expanding its Prius lineup, as you probably already know, with a new larger Prius v wagon/crossover and soon a smaller compact Prius C, but it's been sharing the Prius love over at it's Lexus division for some time now. First was the somewhat conservative but nicely sorted HS 250h sedan, followed up last year by this marvelous little CT 200h liftback. I drove it on the launch program and once again at home in inaugural 2011 guise, and thought it was high time to bring you up to speed with the 2012 model.
News flash: Being new last year, not much has changed for 2012 other than a cool new F-Sport trim level, a new storage compartment with a 12-volt plug that comes as part of its option packages, and

a new colour, Ultrasonic Blue Mica that's exclusive to the F-Sport.
First realization that the CT 200h is unique from the Prius is styling. This is a great looking little hatch, 100-percent Lexus up front, sleek and low at profile and particularly good looking from its squat, racy rear.
Its good looks are backed up by much better handling than its utilitarian cousin, the torsion beam rear suspension replaced by a double-wishbone setup with special sport tuning applied all-round. The front suspension remains MacPherson strut, while coil springs and a stabilizer bar benefits each end for impressive handling.
The CT's agility makes up for a powertrain that's

not exactly awe-inspiring, at least until factoring in fuel economy. That's brilliant! Lexus leads the pack with best-in-class mileage at an estimated 4.5 L/100km city and 4.8 highway using regular unleaded. There isn't a German competitor that comes close in the city, let alone gives you that extra 10-percent savings at the pump, all rivals needing pricier premium fuel. As for acceleration, do a little figuring and you'll see that the CT 200h is 40 kilos (88 lbs) heavier than the Prius it pulls its powertrain from and you'll be able to appreciate it won't exactly light up its front tires. Then again, during regular driving it never felt slow. The Prius hits 100 km/h in just a hair under 10 seconds, and all spec sheets I could find place the CT 200h at a tenth of a second slower at around 10 seconds flat. Yah, not exactly the stuff of performance car legend.
The cause of this rather nonchalant lope

up to highway speeds, as well as its superb fuel economy and Tier 2 Bin 3 SULEV super clean rating, is a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine mated to a 60-kW electric motor and a 201.6-volt sealed NiMH battery for a total net output of 134 horsepower and about 142 lb-ft of torque. A CVT with Drive Mode Select, incorporating EV, ECO and Power modes, puts torque down to the front wheels. You can bet I had my test CT set up for "power" nine times out of ten.
But let me be clear here, I enjoyed driving the CT 200h. It fits my new style of driving perfectly. Ever since fuel prices escalated up and over a buck a litre my right foot has become a lot lighter and smoother. As long as a car takes to the corners well once it's up to speed, I'm satisfied. Off the line performance can be fun, but let's face it, the tickets for this type of hooliganism are just too steep. In reality,

most of us are stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic much of the time anyway, and this reality is exactly where the CT shines. I witnessed it running in electric-only mode quite often during my weeklong stint, and the fuel savings were reward enough.
And it wasn't like I was suffering. My tester was equipped with the Technology package, which ups the sticker from a base of $32,845 including freight to its highest price point of $41,245, while adding the 17-inch rims and moonroof from the Touring package, the leather upholstery, driver's seat and mirror memory, auto-dimming rearview and exterior mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, 10-speaker 6-CD audio system upgrade and more from the Premium package, plus LED enhanced headlamps, backup camera, navigation, and Lexus' ultra-cool award-winning Remote Touch computer mouse-style interface. And all these goodies get added to a

car that already features standard proximity sensing keyless entry with pushbutton ignition, auxiliary input, USB port, XM satellite radio, Bluetooth, an 8-way powered driver's seat, plus all the usual luxury features expected in this class.
I've also got to mention some eco-innovations that set the CT 200h apart from even the iconic Prius, such as its standard Bamboo charcoal-based resin diaphragm speakers, said to be 10- to 15-percent lighter than conventional speaker diaphragms, yet 20-percent stiffer and with 10-percent greater sonic speed for improved weight savings and sound quality, respectively. Additionally, the base car's NuLuxe upholstery looks and feels like leather but costs less to manufacture and is eco-friendly. It weighs about 50-percent less than leather, reduces

CO2 emissions by about 65-percent during manufacture compared to producing synthetic leather, and uses no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). What's more, the CT is built from 30-percent plant-based ecoplastic components; specifically the floor, floor mats, and the rear deck trim sides. Additionally, 85-percent of the CT is recyclable, while 30-percent of its components are made from recycled materials. Pretty impressive, huh?
Of course, it's a Lexus so all of the key safety features come standard, with a few things you might not expect thrown in such as driver and front passenger knee airbags, Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), and Smart Stop Technologies (SST) that automatically idles the engine if the throttle gets pressed hard while braking quickly,

eliminating any chance of unintended acceleration.
The CT is practical too, with more than four hundred litres of cargo capacity behind its 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks and more than nine hundred when you fold the seats flat.
Lexus backs up all this goodness with a 4-year or 80,000 km basic warranty and a 6-year or 110,000 km powertrain warranty, much longer than the class average from a builder highly respected for dependability.
For a sporty looking city car loaded with luxuries, quality and mind-blowing fuel economy, you can't go wrong with a Lexus CT 200h.

A new aggressive GS 350 design is accompanied by serious performance with the F Sport package. (Photo: Lexus) the mellifluous resonance of its 306-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 fills the cabin with an intoxicatingly pleasing aria. The sound, absolutely reeking of high performance, instantly elevates the corners of your mouth, even as your eyes lower into the characteristic thousand-yard squint which always accompanies the level of concentration required to manage a car exuding this much potential.
Flicking the steering wheel to avoid the first obstacle, you're rewarded with a significantly greater degree of directional change than you anticipated. In other words, you moved the wheel a little - the car shifted a lot. So quick is the tiller, particularly when aided by the optional Dynamic Rear Steering system, approaching the next obstacle, having had time to adjust, you clear it with what seemed to be just a thought.
Yeah,

the car's steering is that responsive.
Turning into the first real corner, you're amazed at the stability of the F Sport Lexus, and also by its lack of body roll. Rather than lean the way so many cars do, the Lexus merely changed its attitude in response to your steering input, streaked toward your targeted apex and gracefully finessed the corner.
This is a by-product of the new multilink rear suspension kit fitted to the GS 350, and wholly enhanced by the Lexus Dynamic Handling system. The new suspension arrangement mounts the springs outboard of the shocks to improve stability. A nice side benefit of this configuration is improved trunk space. The Dynamic Handling System is an adaptive

variable affair specifically calibrated to reduce body roll, pitch and heave. This keeps the Lexus perfectly flat through any manner of corner and maximizes the staggered low-profile 19-inch tires' ability to keep their contact patches squarely on the pavement.
The centre console's Drive Mode Selector enables you to select your desired level of responsiveness from the car. Choosing Sport Plus sets the equivalent of "high alert" by advancing the engine's throttle response and advising the ABS braking system to allow you a bit more leeway. The Sport mode gives you the throttle response while leaving ABS in its normal state.
Needless to say, right now,

you're rocking Sport Plus - big time.
Under full acceleration now, taking advantage of the full 277 ft-lbs of torque from the V6, and rocketing toward the next turn, you marvel at the shifting of the six-speed automatic transmission. Delivering an up-shift at just the precise moment to maximize your momentum, then intuitively downshifting during intense braking to sweetly clip the ninety-degree left-hander coming up, the transmission responds adroitly. It times its shifts to perfectly enable the most efficient transfer of power while maintaining stability and velocity. Plus, if you're a do-it-yourselfer, handy paddles behind the steering wheel offer you that capability. BTW, when it comes to cornering, the big 14-inch braking system plays a key role too-hauling the Lexus down

from insane rates of speed repeatedly and with no fade whatsoever.
But enough of the hectic already.
Out on the street, serenely surrounded by cars with considerably less performance potential, the Lexus blends seamlessly. Its track-smoking abilities securely filed away, the palatially luxurious aspects of its nature are called to the fore. The 2013 Lexus GS 350 F Sport is just as quiet and comfortable on the street as it is raucous and capable on the track.

gauge cluster is outstanding, while the crispness and clarity of the optional 835-watt, 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system is impeccable. The seats are the very epitome of the word comfort, with support ensured by extensive bolstering and 18-way adjustability.
In the centre of the dash, the 12.3-inch touch screen multi information display's user interface is outstandingly intuitive. Also operated by way of an updated version of the Lexus Remote Touch mouse-like controller, the unit houses the readouts for the Lexus Enform suite of in-car apps. With this system, the Lexus GS 350 becomes a venue in the cloud computing system, providing you access to services like Bing, Facebook, Pandora, Yelp, and Open Table.

and high tech are both served up very generously.
In other words, all the plush you expect when riding with the sweeping "L" logo is firmly in place, except now the sort of dynamic abilities you find behind the blue and white roundel accompanies it. That Lexus accomplished this while remaining true to the marque's original core values as preferred purveyors of plush to pampered peeps is profound.
The 2013 Lexus GS lineup consists of the high performance F Sport and a standard GS 350; both available in rear- or all-wheel drive. A hybrid GS 450h is in the offing as well. While pricing has yet to be announced, with the base GS 350 starting at $51,900 it's reasonable to expect the F Sport to start on the high side of $50,000.

But all of that is about to change. Straight from corporate headquarters in Japan, a new philosophy has emerged – keep the luxury and add European-style performance, so all future Lexus models can go head to head with the likes of BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
If the 2013 Lexus GS F Sport is any indication of the future, then Lexus is certainly on target.

at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and it is an absolute blast.
Power comes from a 3.5-litre V6 that outputs 306 horsepower. The engine's intake features a "sound generator" that adds a snarly quality when you put your foot into it. Think small block V8 for the sound and power this engine creates. Available in rear wheel drive with rear wheel steering, or all-wheel drive, the GS F Sport's handling is spot on. Turn in any direction and inputs are followed as if the GS F Sport was an agile, obedient canine.

with variable gear ratio electric power steering. Sport seats with power adjustable side bolsters lock you in place during spirited driving.
When it's time to slow your roll, massive multi-piston brakes with enhanced cooling stop you effectively.
Styling is super aggressive, and is the first to feature Lexus' new "Spindle" grille. Body panels are sharply creased, and very dramatic, but this is not typical tacky Japanese add on styling. All panels flow with synergistic harmonies that indicate speed, power and performance. And lest we forget this is a Lexus, luxury.

cruiser with the simple rotation of the adaptive damping system dial. In "Eco" mode, throttle settings are geared towards fuel economy, and the car returns a decent 8.5 L/100km to boot. In "Sport F Plus" mode, all parameters are geared for maximum performance.
Should you want to be coddled, opt for the GS Luxury Package, which still gives you 306 horsepower with a friendlier wood and leather demeanor, and less aggressive exterior styling.
But for me, the F Sport is the ticket. I get rocket ship performance and reliability I can count on. Luxury performance car ownership no longer has to send you to the poorhouse.
Expect the 2013 Lexus GS lineup, which also includes a Hybrid model, in showrooms in February 2012. Prices have not yet been set.

Introduced earlier this year, the Lexus CT 200h has already established itself as the most efficient luxury-brand car on the market, and the value gateway into the Lexus lineup, and now Lexus is offering it with more equipment that will position it as a car that the green-conscious enthusiast will want to have. Already possessing agile handling and performance with the same level of refinement, quality and reliability that owners have come to expect from the Lexus brand, the F-Sport adds an athletic dimension and joins the growing family of performance-oriented Lexus F-Sport models.
As part of this package, the CT 200h will receive an F-Sport tuned suspension with performance shock absorbers, a set of 17-inch wheels with high-gloss finish, rear spoiler, metal front scuff plates, a perforated leather steering wheel, leather shift knob, aluminum sport pedals with rubber inserts, metallic trim on the dash panel, storage compartment with 12V outlet, and perforated black leather-trimmed seats.
All this is added to a compact hybrid sedan that is the emissions and efficiency leader in the luxury class, as the CT 200h emits approximately 60 percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new vehicle, and has fuel consumption ratings of 4.5L/100km in the city and 4.8L/100km on the highway utilizing regular gasoline.
The CT 200h's sporting credentials are further proven with the standard Sport mode in the hybrid drive system, which maximizes the car's performance and agility. The throttle and Electric Power Steering (EPS) settings are modified, and it provides less intrusive operation of the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) systems. When Sport mode is selected, instrument panel lighting changes from blue to red and the hybrid power indicator is replaced with a tachometer.
Add to that all the comfort and convenience features available in the Touring, Premium and Technology packages, and you get a compact car that impresses on several levels.
